playing with paste…part 2...

you guys are WAY TOO smart!

when I wrote the last post about the crackled texture paste, I purposely didn't say anything about using it on glass…
I knew it worked…

I had added white embossing paste to a glass bottle…
quite a while ago...

here's a photo from CHA January of 2013…

I had plans for a glass & embossing paste post in a few weeks…

HOWEVER…I got so many emails, comments here & on Facebook, that I had to move this post up…

I have a GREAT success to share today and also an EPIC FAIL…
I'll share that too…

I wanted you to know that not every experiment goes 100% as planned…

to create this bottle…

I had a flea market vintage bottle with a great shape…

I covered it with a layer of silver metallic embossing paste, let it dry, then added a layer of crackled texture paste…

before adding the crackled texture paste, I added 2 drops of potting soil archival reinker to the paste…

it dried to look like this...

to create a deeper color, I added tree branch archival and potting soil archival, with the blending tool & dried it…

now it looked like this...

you'll see (2 photos above) that the neck portion of the bottle was unpasted (is that a word?)

so I applied gold metallic embossing paste over the naked glass…
I found it easiest to get all the fluted areas on the neck by applying the paste with my finger…

trigger the james bond goldfinger music…lol...

I got to use this awesome medicine label stamp again…
the brand name is "august flower"…keep that in mind…
it LCS056 & the set name is "art is therapeutic"...

I inked the stamp with jet black archival & pressed the bottle onto the inked stamp…

always remember to dry archival when used over paste...

to jazz up the neck, I used tim's industrious border stickers

I changed it up by rubbing on some forget-me-not archival & then lightly swiped over it to hit just the raised areas with fern green archival…

dried it...

now it looks like this...

remember the brand name?

tim to the rescue with this perfect new botanical remnant rub flower, butterfly, words & numbers..

the rubs are awesome over the crackled texture paste
just make sure the ink is totally dry before adding the rubs…

you'll see a small area on the right top side…
I dropped the bottle on the tile kitchen floor & the paste popped off just in that area where it hit the floor...

glue n seal fixed that…
I just applied some over the popped off area & that saved the day…
because I used the matte glue n seal, you don't notice a thing…

the rest of the paste is firmly attached…

it was needing something…

so I created a lid, starting with an idea-ology faucet knob

I brushed some tarnished brass distress paint on random areas & filled in the other areas with mushroom alcohol ink

it looks worn, so it coordinates well with the bottle...

the next step was to add mushroom alcohol ink to this vintage Christmas tree reflector...

I wanted the lid to sit securely inside the bottle, but I didn't have a cork that fit …

I needed something with a bit of length...

plan B…

I sacrificed a mini mister lid…
Rick drilled a hole in it to accept the long screw
I added a gob of hot glue to the inside of the mini mister lid to hold the screw in place…

looks like a cork to me…
plus it's totally hidden…so it doesn't matter...

the lid fit perfectly in the hole of the reflector and made this FLOWER bottle topper

remember the brand name? it all ties in…I LOVE IT!

I was totally thrilled with how it turned out...

other side...

I wanted to play more, but didn't have a vintage bottle that I wanted to use…

so I dug out 2 bottle that I got either at Michael's or maybe Hobby Lobby?

for this one I added a layer of gold metallic embossing paste, let it dry, then added the crackled texture paste
I tinted the paste with one drop of potting soil reinker first…

it dried to this…
it's not done, but it's ready for when I have time play...

now for the epic fail…
or is it?

I added a layer of black embossing paste to another bottle…it's the same exact as above…

let it dry, then added the crackled texture paste

I got up this morning to this…
it's ALL popping off in huge chunks...

I haven't figured out why this happened yet…but I WILL…
after I take off the chunks, I'll start again with plan B...

so for now, if you want to try this, I suggest using the metallic gold or silver paste…they both work great...

if you know me, you probably know that I won't waste these big crackled chunks…

I think they'll be cool to add to a canvas background…
I'll just glue them on…or maybe stamp on them first?

well…I didn't hear from the 3 remaining winners from the 1000th post giveaway...

so I decided to give away the prizes to random commenters at UNANNOUNCED times…

so it could be today…or it could be later this week…

the winners could be chosen from blog comments or from my FACEBOOK PAGE

I think surprises are GOOD…
& comments are too…

and speaking of FACEBOOK
I shared a mini tutorial over there on Saturday…
5 easy steps to create this cute bird…

check it out...

I have some GOOD NEWS!

I got inside info on Friday afternoon that my new archival inks started shipping!

they should be in stores & ready THIS WEEK!
be watching!

and…

don't forget the reinkers…GREAT for inking pads & for archival reinker backgrounds too...

ok…lots on the TO*DO list today…

I hope you'll get out your embossing & crackled texture pastes and…

make art!

let's play with paste!

specifically my new crackled texture paste…
and a little gold metallic paste too...

before I start the project tutorial, I wanted to answer a few questions and to give you some tips for working with the embossing/texture pastes…

always clean the paste from the palette knife & stencil before the paste dries…

* the pastes…all flavors…will not crack & fall off the surface, even if the surface is  flexed…

* the pastes stick to fabric…most times this is a good thing, but if you're wearing fancy clothes…maybe not!

* it's best to let the pastes air dry…but I'll show you something cool below...

* I like to set the wet pastes near a sunny window to help speed up the drying process…

* the white & black pastes have a similar matte "marshmallow" type surface…

* the translucent, metallic gold, metallic silver and the crackled texture paste will dry with a more solid smooth surface...

* distress watercolor cardstock will warp the least…
and using thinner layers of paste help with warping too...

* depending on the paste flavor used, you can alter the DRY pastes with distress markers, archival inks, distress paints, distress stains, color washes, Perfect Pearls mists and more…

* to change the color of the pastes BEFORE applying it to the surface, ONE DROP of the archival or distress reinkers mixed into the paste can create any color paste you need…it's best to use reinkers, which will not change the consistency of the pastes...

* when mixing color into the pastes, remember you can't put it back in the jar. SO…keep this in mind when mixing colors into the pastes…mix only what you'll use...

* when you use up a jar of paste, wash out the empty jar & save it to store premixed colored paste…these jars are specifically made to be non permeable, which makes the paste last for years…

* the new crackled texture paste requires a layer of dry paste to adhere to & the base is what keeps the cracks in place…the base color will show thru the cracks…my favorite pastes to use under the crackled texture paste are the black, gold & silver embossing pastes

* I had questions about shipping the pastes in this frigid weather…
if the paste should freeze, let it warmup to room temp before opening the jar & using it.  it will be ok…

* you can stamp into WET paste with a rubber stamp & the paste will dry with texture/pattern…mist the stamp with water, then stamp into the WET paste…clean the stamp…an old toothbrush is a handy tool...

* the pastes can be used thru a stencil or spread over a surface…

today we're not using a stencil for the paste…

but I'll share a fun technique...

let's get started…

spread a very thin layer of gold embossing paste over distress watercolor cardstock…I used the textured side of the cardstock to show you how little of the base paste layer is needed…
either side of the watercolor cardstock will work just fine…

the distress watercolor cardstock sheets are 4 ¼ x 5 ½ ...

I used 3 pieces of distress watercolor cardstock, so that I could create 3 sheets…I wanted each to have a different color...

use the heat tool on this layer to dry it…
you'll notice that the gold paste goes on sort of a butterscotch color & when dry, it changes to a beautiful metallic gold…

the top left corner is dry…the right side is not...

put a small amount of the crackled texture paste onto the craft sheet & mix in ONE DROP of the fern green archival reinker…
then spread over the DRY gold paste…

you'll see in the photo below that I don't make the layer smooth or perfectly even…I like to see spots of the base color popping out...

set this aside to dry...

for the next sheet I mixed ONE DROP of the cornflower blue reinker into some crackled texture paste on my craft sheet, then spread it over the DRY gold paste…

and set it aside to dry…

in the photo below, you'll see that it's mostly dry, but there is one dark area that is still wet…

at this point, you can blast it with the heat tool, to finish it off…

the cracked cornflower paste looks like this…see the gold paste peeking out from the cracks?

FABULOUS!

for the sheet below, I mixed ONE DROP of the red geranium reinker with ONE DROP of the orange blossom reinker to create this awesome salmon color…

see those dark wet spots?

in the photo below you'll see that I blasted the wet areas with the heat tool & OVERHEATED them to create this cool texture…

even though I bubbled it, the paste will not pop off & the texture stays raised…

this is another fun option, especially for mixed media backgrounds…

I didn't use this sheet today, but it's ready to go when I need it...

I always save my scraps & since I had a bit of the blue paste left over, I spread it thru my butterfly stencil
later I'll cut it out , stamp over it & you'll see it on a project someday…

I cut a strip of the green sheet to use with the leaves from this stamp

these leaves are AWESOME to use with so many stamps & stencils…and it's easy to cut them out...

you'll see that I cut the strip close to the size of the leaves, so there's no waste of the crackle…

I'll have room for another leaf on the scrap...

ink the leaves area with jet black archival, stamp & dry...

oops…forgot a photo, but I used the perfect peony stamp with jet black archival & stamped it onto the dry blue paste…

then cut out both pieces...

next I used fern green archival to add some shading to the leaves…with the handy dandy adorable mini blending tool

I like to use the leaves upside down with this flower...

that little bit of shading does make a difference!

the flower needed shading too, so I added a bit of cornflower blue on the lower petals...

& it looks like this...

ok…now to make a card…

I had a strip of manila card stock leftover from something, so I wanted to use it up…

it's 10 ¼ inches x 3 ½ inches…

I scored it & folded it in half to create a card...

I used the new tree branch archival to stamp this frame

then sprinkled clear superfine detail embossing powder over the frame & heated it to melt the powder & emboss the image…

tree branch is a GREAT color…it's neutral & looks good with most colors…

this was interesting…
when clear embossed, tree branch looks sort of a vintage gold color on the manila cardstock…hmmm…didn't expect that!

to add color to the card, I swiped weathered wood and antique linen distress stains onto the craft sheet, misted them with water, then plopped the card front in the fluid & dried it

so far...

next decision before I choose a sentiment...

did I want the card to be side opening?

or plan B…
to open from the top?

either would work...

 plan B it is!

I stamped the sentiment with jet black archival

and I liked fern green archival for the mini flourishes...

it was easy to add subtle stripes to the background with the yikes stripes stencil and antique linen distress ink on the blending tool…

it's best to tape the stripes stencil down to hold it in place & work WITH the stripes, not against them...

now…it's much better!

next, I glued the leaves in place (upside down from the stamp)
then added the flower…

I like it & I almost quit there...

I used fern green to stamp a portion of the stamp on a manila scrap & cut it out...

then added it to the top back of the card…

here's a better look at the flower with the gold cracks…
it's a very cool effect

when the crackled texture paste is applied unevenly to the surface, you'll see more random areas of the base color…I like that…it adds interest & it's not so perfect...

the card does have some thin layers, but it's still an easy one to mail…

now I'm thinking the sentiment will work for Valentine's Day…
I think I'll give it to you know who…and write a message inside...

well I hope I've given you the scoop on playing with pastes…
if there's something I missed, just ask…

I have LOTS more to share…
LOTS more paste ideas brewing...

I think this technique is a good example on how to use the pastes without using a stencil…

wouldn't a whole crackled texture paste sheet make a great background?

this technique will also work on a canvas…think HOME DECOR!

there are lots of cool color combos to try too...
how about potting soil archival reinker mixed into the crackled paste & applied over gold embossing paste?

the silver paste also looks great as a base for the blue paste & lots of the other colors too…

these crackled sheets can also be die cut…oh the possibilities!

I hope you'll get out your pastes & play then...

make art!

wendy

Q & A and 6 WINNERS!

my plan for today was to include a stencil or SiSi tutorial…

but I had this idea…and I HAD to try it…

which lead to several other experiments
which explains why there's no tutorial today…

I simply got carried away!

but I did discover that my original idea will work…
I just had to figure out the key ingredients…
shhhhh…don't tell anyone…
BUT it's a new way to use my archival inks…

this will be a tutorial very soon...

so today...

I thought I'd answer some recent questions…

#1…is the vintage floral stencil the same size as the stamp in your heirloom stamp set?

no…I made the stencil larger…I wanted to be able to mix & match the flower with other stencils/stamps…

making the stencil larger also made it a bit easier to cut out the pieces (especially those little leaves) & it fits large art journal pages better…
yes...it still fits card fronts too…

I also wanted it larger to make the holes for the little dots larger, so we could add ink thru the stencil…
when the stencil was the same size as the stamp, those little dot holes were just too small...

but…it you have the stamp, you can stamp the flower on a scrap, cut it out & layer it over the vintage floral stencil flower…
that's easy & really fun!

#2…do you start designing immediately again after CHA or do you get a well deserved break?

don't feel sorry for me! I LOVE my job!

we did have some new product discussions yesterday…these things take time, so we start early!

right now I'm working on my teaching schedule & my demo schedule for Ted at conventions & for Ranger…

I've been in contact with store owners to choose dates & to decide classes…
and after that comes scheduling flights…

I should have at least the start of my teaching schedule up here on the right sidebar in about 2 weeks…(I hope)

at the beginning of the year I also work on new classes and this year I am refreshing my Ranger class to include new products and new favorite techniques…

this year I'm planning to teach a 2 full day large art journal class, where we'll spend the weekend making the cover from my new art parts & then we'll fill the journal with technique pages…
I'm super excited about this…
come spend the weekend with me!

the 2 full days will allow us enough time for everyone to leave with a really cool multipage mixed media art journal...

I also want to revamp my studio & change things around a bit…

and then there's always a house project idea brewing…
mum's the word…I haven't told U_KNOW WHO yet…
surprises are good!

#3…are you planning stamp giveaways like you have done in the past? did I miss them?

YOU BET I AM! I just got the email today from Stampers Anonymous that they are shipping some prizes…stay tuned!
I'll give some away here & some on my FACEBOOK page too...

#4…I just discovered your/Tim's blog. would you recommend a beginner starting with a blending tool or the new round one?

you'll really need & LIKE both & here's why…

I will always use the original rectangle for large backgrounds…
it's much larger, so your background will get inked much quicker...

the new mini is perfect for stenciling or for adding shading to the edges of your art…

the small size will also make specific shading in areas much easier...

so…each is important & has a use…

#5…how are you adding a hole to your stencils for your stencil binder…do the new stencils have a hole?

the crop a dile is what I use. it works like magic…
paper punches are not strong enough to go thru the stencil material easily…

no, the new stencils do not have a hole in the corner…

#6…the mini distress pads are so cute. please tell ranger we want them all…

haha! it's already in the works…

there will be 3 sets released every 2 months…so it doesn't break the art budget…

I agree…they are super CUTE!

#7…would you explain your SiSi? I think I understand, but then I'm not sure I understand all of the idea…

you bet I will…that will be a tutorial in the very near future…
please stay tuned!

#8... when are new things shipping?

YIKES! I HATE this question…because I can't give you an exact answer…

Ted has 9 lasers working 16 hours a day, 7 days a week cutting stencils & art parts…

the factory is BOOMING & the staff is working overtime...

they had a good supply done before CHA…
but the exact date depends on when your store placed their order…
first ordered gets shipped first…

BUT...the new crackled texture paste should be restocked any day…YIPPEE!

as for stamps, that too depends on the order date…

the last I heard,  my 6 new Ranger archival inks will ship early February…
so no long wait there…AWESOME!

I'll keep you posted as I hear more details...

#9…what happens to your CHA samples at the end of the show?
can stores purchase them?

well…I have NONE here!

the samples I made for Ranger stay with Ranger & get taken to events…

the samples I made for the Stampers Anonymous booth, travel to all the conventions with Ted…so you just may see them at a stamp convention near you…

so that's why they are not for sale to store owners...

YIKES…that reminds me…
I better add to my TO*DO list…
make more samples!

#10 what ONE product (from any company) did you see at CHA that got your attention?

believe it or not…I didn't walk around at all…
I know it's hard to believe…
I came home & checked out the internet to see what was there…

our demo schedule is hectic & there were just a few minutes each day to spare…

BUT…the one MUST HAVE, in my opinion, is tim's new distress marker spritzer…
if you like stencils, this opens the door to so much fun…

those little puffs of air are pure magic…
trust me…the spritzer is a MUST HAVE!

I especially LOVE that it can be used with many brands/types of markers...

#10…will your reinker technique work on glossy paper?
it kind of sort of works OK, but…
because you use so much fluid, the fluid does soak thru the paper…and if you get carried away, you will warp & ruin the paper...

I really like the specialty stamping paper the best, because the magic coating on the paper prevents any seep thru to the back…
which means…if you're doing an art journal page, the back can be used without trying to cover up an ugly mess something that soaked thru…

use it once & you'll be hooked! trust me!

#11…can your crackled texture paste be coloured with reinkers like the others?
YES! you can use just one drop of the archival or distress reinkers to change the color of the crackled texture paste, before applying it to your surface…remember that reinkers are very concentrated, so one drop goes a long way!

any more questions? did I miss any?

since I don't have a tutorial…
I thought I'd show you some different ways to use the large vintage doily stamp…

you can use the whole background stamp, like I did on the back of this art journal cover…
I covered the art parts covers with specialty stamping paper &
I used forget-me-not archival for the doily
carnation red for the daisy SiSi, leaf green for the leaves, watering can to stencil the stripes & add a stencil & jet black archival for my words/sentiment & the cute mini bird...

on the tag below I used the same background stamp 2 ways…
it's stamped directly onto the bottom of the tag…

to create a tag topper, I stamped the vintage doily with tree branch archival onto a manila scrap, added it to the top of the tag, but didn't glue it flat & then trimmed off the excess...

use it whole or use just pieces of the stamp…
once again…anything that can be used more than one way makes me very HAPPY…

Ok…on to the winners…

these 3 lucky people have won a seat in the online STENCILED class…

huge CONGRATS…

It's just a little cruel to make us choose, but if pushed to the edge of a cliff I'd have to take 'add a stencil' and 'vintage floral' with me. And then you go use them on a gorgeous tag!! I NEED both - simples. Thanks for this amazing chance to win. Jenny x
